Hornets

PROFESSIONAL HORNET REMOVAL - NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK

Hornets are the largest of the predatory eusocial wasps and resemble their close relatives, the yellowjackets. They are differentiated from other vespine wasps by a relatively sizeable cranial vertex and a rounded abdominal gaster. The majority of hornet species are found in the tropics of Asia. The European hornet was accidentally introduced to North America during the nineteenth century and is the only true hornet found in North America. European hornets are widely dispersed throughout Europe, Northeast Asia, Russia, Ukraine, and North America. Bald-faced hornets, also known as white-faced hornets, are indigenous to North America but are not true hornets but are a yellowjacket wasp species.

HORNET LIFE CYCLE AND REPRODUCTION LONG ISLAND, NY

Like wasps, hornets undergo complete metamorphosis and have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In the spring, an over-wintered fertilized queen hornet will arise from hibernation and select a sheltered place to build a nest. The hornet nest may be built in the hollow of a tree, on a tree branch, inside a backyard shed, barn, attic, shrub, or on the soffit of a Nassau County home. Like other eusocial wasps, hornets will construct a gray paper-like nest using plant materials they acquire by stripping bark from trees and shrubs. The queen will initially build up to fifty cells, and an egg is laid in each cell. The eggs will hatch after five to eight days, giving rise to hornet larvae. The developing larvae will transform into the first generation of female workers that will undertake all of the tasks previously carried out by the queen except egg-laying. The hornet nest consists of one queen, which lays eggs and is attended by female worker hornets that are not capable of laying fertile eggs. A hornet nest generally contains two to four hundred worker hornets who defend the nest and feed on nectar, fruit pulp, tree sap, honey, and any sugar-containing foodstuffs. Worker hornets catch and kill arthropods and other insects, masticating them and feeding them to the developing hornet larvae.

HORNET STINGS NASSAU COUNTY, NEW YORK

Female hornets possess stingers used to kill their prey and defend their nest. Male hornets, also known as drones, are not equipped with stingers. Hornets can repeatedly sting, and their stings are very painful because hornet venom is comprised of a high concentration of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Bald-faced hornets have an extraordinary defense mechanism that allows them to spray venom from their stingers into the eyes of nest intruders resulting in temporary blindness. When threatened, hornets, like many social wasps, can release an attack pheromone resulting in the mobilization of the entire nest to sting in defense. Hundreds of hornets may sting a human or animal perceived as a threat to their nest. While a single hornet sting may not inject a lethal dose of venom, multiple stings can be fatal even to people who aren't allergic. People that are allergic to the venom of wasps may also be allergic to hornet venom. The toxicity of a hornet sting is dependent upon the hornet species. The sting of the Asian giant hornet, also known as the murder hornet, is among the most venomous and is responsible for thirty to fifty deaths yearly in Japan. Murder hornets can spray venom into a person's eyes, which may result in a sight-threatening injury.

MURDER HORNETS LONG ISLAND, NY

The Asian giant hornet is the world's largest hornet reaching two inches in length. Asian giant hornets, or murder hornets, are indigenous to Asia and found in parts of Russia. Most recently, the murder hornet has been found in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Murder hornet nests were found in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington in the United States, prompting concern that it may become an invasive species. The murder hornet's predatory habits can be devastating to honey bee colonies. Murder hornets can destroy a honey bee colony in just a few hours. With honeybee populations in decline, the arrival of Asian giant hornets in the Pacific Northwest has created great concern. Eastern cicada killer wasps, native to Nassau County, New York, are often mistakenly identified as murder hornets.
