Coyote Sightings on Long Island, New York
The Eastern Coyote is expanding its territorial range to include Long Island, New York. A security camera captured footage of a coyote in the backyard of a Nassau County residence in Manhassett. In Suffolk County, National Park Rangers at Smith Point claim that coyotes are living on Fire Island. Coyotes have also been spotted at Robert Moses State Park, in Mattituck, and on the South Fork of Long Island. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation estimates that approximately twenty thousand to thirty thousand coyotes reside in the state of New York. Coyotes live throughout upstate New York, and there are established colonies in Westchester County, the parklands of the Bronx, and northern Queens. It is anticipated that the Eastern Coyote will fully colonize Long Island within the next decade. The Eastern Coyote, also known as the Coywolf, is a canine hybrid with both coyote and gray wolf parentage. Adult Eastern Coyotes typically weigh forty-five to sixty pounds and are present throughout the eastern United States. In addition to New York, its range includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. The Eastern Coyote can also be found in the eastern Canadian provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Labrador, and Newfoundland.
The Eastern Coyote is an opportunistic omnivore that primarily preys upon small mammals, such as rabbits, squirrels, voles, mice, and birds. They will also eat vegetables, fruits, berries, insects, amphibians, carrion, and human trash. Researchers at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry state that coyotes usually hunt in pairs. During winter, white-tailed deer are targeted by coyotes. However, roadkilled deer or deer that died via natural causes are more frequently scavenged. According to researchers, the adult deer that are taken by coyotes are usually injured or sickly and would have died in the absence of coyote predation. In the spring, coyotes prey upon deer fawns.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, on average, six hundred fifty New Yorkers are hospitalized each year due to dog attacks, but there are only a few coyote attacks annually in the entire nation. Coyotes instinctively fear humans, and attacks by this animal on human beings have been historically rare. Coyotes are nocturnal animals but can also be seen during daylight hours. Therefore, if you see a coyote during the day, that doesn't automatically mean it has rabies, but caution should be taken, as with any wild animal.
